ANGRY BIRDS WEEK COMING TO THE MAY WATTS ARTROOM
May 21-25

Classes who have earned points for good work and behaviour will be enjoying some 3d/form lessons creating some of the angry birds. We will be using craft foam scraps, paper towel rolls, clay, balloons, etc. to create some of those birds. Students will learn to create these figures in various types of 3d sculptures. A lot of fun taking a 2d picture and turning it into a 3d form.

We are springing into the art element of FORM for the next couple of weeks. All classes will be making shoes as their 3d form lesson.  Second grade used Model Magic Clay to create these cute bunny slippers.

Students drew an abstract landscape with pencil.  They outlined it with glue.  Then they used colored chalk to show their knowledge of warm and cool colors.  If the foreground was in cool colors then they needed to do the background in warm colors.

During the month of October/November, the students will be studying SHAPE.  The students learned about organic and geometric shapes.  They made a design of fall leaves (organic shape).  The first week of November, they will learn about Cubism and the artist Pablo Picasso.  Here are the students from Ms. Wolfe's second grade class.

During the month of September, the students will be studying LINE.  The students learned about the artist Piet Mondrian.   To create these Mondrian lions pictures, they needed 1. to use only horizontal and vertical lines. 2. to use a primary color (red, blue, yellow) scheme plus black.  3. to make a primary color pattern border.
This is work from 2HB the students who sit at yellow table.

Aug.22-26th
For the first week of Art, all students designed a paper graphic t-shirt.  They drew examples of our cool tools, that we use weekly,  from our school wide PBIS program.

Posted below are some t-shirt designs by 2BR.  All students t-shirts will eventually  be displayed during the year on the office hallway bulletin board, as their class earns their gold tickets for the week.

Go back to the home page to view the links.

Each grade level did different lessons on these artists.   Please take time to share this packet with your child and talk about it.  You may want to hang up some of the pictures, get them framed, and send or give them to other relatives.

MATTISE FISH BOWL
Students were given a step by step lesson using the document camera and projector on how to draw this scene. They also added their own touches. Most of the picture was colored with oil crayons.  Then they got to use  watercolors and fat brushes to do the water and the background.  Then Ms. Hemmens added SALT on top of the water to make it look bubbly.  They all look ABSOLUTELY AMAZING.....

MATISSE CUTOUTS
Students made their own organic shapes as the class did one together online.

PICASSO - THREE MUSICIANS
Students looked at the print the 3 musicians.  Can you find the three musicians and their instruments?  How about Picasso's dog?  Then everyone had time to color.

If any of these projects are not included in your child's packet it may be because they were absent OR the picture is hanging in the hall OR I kept it for the Festival.

Characteristics of the second grade child in art...
  • observe more details in their surroundings (buildings, people, clothes)
  • love nature (animals), imaginary creatures, fantasy
  • extremely self-confident
