Summer 2013 is here. The projects have all been passed back. The ARts Festival looked fabulous this year with all the wonderful artwork from May Watts Students. The artroom has been organized and cleaned thanks to many of the students.

I look forward to my son's wedding on June 15th. I turn 60 on August 10th. The 2013-2014 will be my last year of teaching. So I have many milestones this summer. The rest of the time, I will have fun working in my garden, going to garage sales, walking Matisse and enjoying relaxing time with friends.

The district is converting over to EDLINE instead of blogging so I will not have any further editions to this blog. I hope you can still enjoy what is on it.

May Watts Art Program

My name is Ms. Sue Hemmens and I am the art teacher here at May Watts. This will hopefully explain what your child does in Art Class. I feel it is an important part of your child's education. I incorporate the State and National Standards for Art Education in the lessons. In elementary school, we concentrate heavily on the Elements and Principles of Design. We also learn various techniques and work on fine motor skills while working on our projects. Concepts build upon each other as students progress through each grade level. In the upper
grades, the techniques and processes become more difficult and we work on our projects in more depth. For third through fifth graders, writing and self-assessment are integral parts of the learning process as the students reflect and evaluate each finished project.

I always stress to Do their personal Best. They know they do not have to be perfect or worry that their art isn't acceptable.

Artwork will go home at the end of each Unit/month. You will receive all the work that the child has done. The first month we concentrate on the element of LINE. So at the end of Sept. (approximately) they will bring all their work. (Unless it is hanging on a bulletin board, the child was absent, or I have kept the work for the Fine Arts Festival in May)

The Elements of Art are LINE, SHAPE, PATTERN, TEXTURE, COLOR, VALUE, SPACE, and FORM. These are the things that artists use to create Art. Principles of Design are : Movement, balance, emphasis, rhythm, contrast, proportion, and unity.
